Hey Mijo, care to share how you have your lathe set up for turning reel seats? I think I've seen in other photos that you have a Jet Mini, which is what I have. However, mine's totally stock. I've fooled around on it a bit, but haven't done any serious turning. Did you add a 4-jaw chuck or anything, or are you turning your seats "as-is"?

That cottonwood is pretty, I bet it'll look nice. I've found some nice pecan and bois d'arc I'd like to try turning into seats. I'd also like to chop down my neighbor's oak tree to get at the VW Bug-sized burl that's about 20 feet off the ground, but I'm not sure that'd go over so well.

I turn to round on the stock setup. take a rubber mallet and whack the piece into the live center and crank the tailstock center into tho other oend of the blank. after marking both centers of course. ya gotta be patient and go slow and you do cause an ungodly mess. I may have to figure out some sort of dust control. after turning a piece of ebony I had black boogers for a couple daze. not sure I like that.

I've got a three jaw chuck for chucking up rod blanks to turn and shape grips.

as far as boring grips, I've yet to figure that one out on my own lathe. I'll have to clamp a drill bit into the three jaw chuck and somehow secure the round to the tailstock and bore from there. until I figure out I guess I'll just have to run up to shay's and use his lathe(s) to finish the job.

once the blank's been bored, put it on all thread jig clamp and turn to size.

go for it. you'll figure things out.

Upon further inspection of my stock I have found out that is AZ scrub oak burl.
